Order Background
ABOUT THE ORDER The Order of the Phoenix was created by Albus Dumbledore in 1972 in response to the growing threat of Voldemort and his Death Eaters. The group was originally focused largely on research and reconnaissance efforts, to figure out who was behind the Death Eater attacks and possible non-violent ways to interfere with their plans. As the war progressed, it became clear that a more direct involvement was required. The Order began focusing more on trying to get advance knowledge of attacks and predicting where the Death Eaters might strike next, which has led to more direct confrontations between the two sides. The Order is, by necessity, a secret organization. Not only will the Death Eaters freely go after anyone who they know to oppose them, but participation in what are seen as vigilante activities by the Ministry is illegal. Although some members may have become targets for the Death Eaters or the focus of Ministry scrutiny by their own individual actions, the overall membership of the Order remains a secret. There is no public knowledge of the Order at all, although both the DMLE and the Death Eaters are aware that there is some form of vigilante group out fighting from the encounters that they have had. Dumbledore's leadership is also a secret, although there are undoubtedly some who suspect his involvement. |
ORGANIZATION Although the Order is far more democratic than their Death Eater counterparts and everyone's opinion and input is valued, they quickly determined a need to create some form of organization to try and control the chaos inherent to a group that is filled with a few too many hot-headed Gryffindors. Dumbledore is the head of the Order and while he is available to answer any questions via owl, he leaves most of the day to day leading of the Order to the seven "team leaders" that he has appointed: Frank and Alice Longbottom, Caradoc Dearborn, Minerva McGonagall, Aberforth Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Emmeline Vance. If one of the team leaders is incapacitated or killed, two of the other team leaders will share the responsibility of leading the team until the original team leader returns or a new one is appointed by Dumbledore. For the teams, everyone serves on two or three teams, depending on what outside commitments they have. Order members with demanding full time jobs should likely limit themselves to two teams and teams are limited to eight members each. Everyone is able to choose their own teams when they join the Order (provided space is available), although a team leader can decide that someone isn't a good fit and have them choose a new assignment if necessary. Team leaders serve as mentors for the members of their team in addition to providing specialised training in their field, although all Order members have also had basic skills training. Just because a character isn't on the offence team doesn't mean they won't be fighting or asked to help with strategy and planning. Offence: Pretty self-explanatory. This is the team that focuses on offensive combat training and is the first to go rushing off into battle. Leader: Frank Longbottom Members Sirius Black Lily Evans Remus Lupin James Potter Marlene McKinnon Dorcas Meadowes Emmeline Vance [open] Defence: Another combat-focused team, although the defence team also works on other protective measures including warding and traps. Leader: Members Sirius Black Edgar Bones Remus Lupin Dorcas Meadowes James Potter Gideon Prewett [name] [name] Healing: Members of this team are trained in basic healing skills to help their fellow Order members and other Death Eater victims. (Note that while the leader of this team should be a fully-qualified healer, membership is open to anyone in the Order.) Leader: Edgar Bones Members Lily Evans Desmond Gumboil Dorcas Meadowes Andromeda Tonks [open] [open] [open] [open] Reconnaissance: The spies of the Order, these are the members who investigate suspected Death Eaters and their activities. This can range from surveillance to infiltration and can be a more dangerous assignment than combat. Leader: Caradoc Dearborn Members Benjy Fenwick Alice Longbottom Marlene McKinnon Peter Pettigrew Andromeda Tonks [open] [open] [open] Research: For those with less enthusiasm about field work, there is more than enough research to be done on the Death Eaters, on possible spells and tools to be used and trying to figure out where they might strike next. It's like the Order's own Department of Mysteries. Leader: Aberforth Dumbledore Members Benjy Fenwick Desmond Gumboil Gideon Prewett Ted Tonks [open] [open] [open] [open] Communication: This team handles all forms of communication with those outside of the Order. Most of it is handled anonymously but they are in charge of propaganda as well as efforts to warn people that might be in danger without revealing the Order. Leader: Minerva McGonagall Members Frank Longbottom Marlene McKinnon Peter Pettigrew James Potter Ted Tonks [open] [open] [open] Strategy/Planning: Although the Order welcomes ideas from any of their members, this is the team that is focused on strategy and planning efforts, basically trying to figure out what the Order's next move should be. Leader: Alice Longbottom Members Sirius Black Caradoc Dearborn Lily Evans Remus Lupin [open] [open] [open] [open] |
RECRUITMENT The original members of the Order were hand-picked by Dumbledore when he created the group and were asked to join not only for their talents but for their passion and perceived willingness to stand up for what's right. The newer recruits are a mix of those recommended by current members and those Dumbledore has chosen himself. For those who were recommended by a current member, it is still Dumbledore who makes the final decision on their membership (and extends the invitation himself), although he does sometimes ask for feedback from the group. Students are not asked to join the Order, although your character may have been approached as early as the summer after leaving school, particularly in the more recent years as the war has escalated. Anyone is free to refuse the invitation, although Dumbledore obliviates them if they do. Likewise you may leave the Order at any time but doing so will also result in your character being obliviated of all knowledge of the Order. And members can be kicked out of the Order, although this is a drastic step that has yet to be taken with anyone. |
RESPONSIBILITIES Joining the Order isn't something to be taken lightly. Everyone is expected to take an active role in the Order, whether it's fighting or helping more with propaganda and planning. It is often dangerous, which Dumbledore makes very clear to everyone when he approaches them, and it isn't something to do because you want protection or because all of your friends are doing it. Most everyone does have responsibilities outside of the Order, whether they're family commitments or a day job and everyone should respect that, but when the Order needs you, you're expected to make your excuses because saving the world is a priority. |
ORDER SUPPORTERS Because of the secrecy surrounding the Order, "Order Supporters" is more of an informal designation than a formal one. These are characters who, for whatever reason, have some knowledge of the Order - usually through friends or family who are involved - and support the Order's ideals without actively being a part of the organization. They can be turned to for help, but more in an unofficial capacity where they're asked by current members to help out on a project without having a lot of knowledge about what's going on. This is also the category for people most likely to become members of the Order, because of their connections to the group. |
