Death Eater Background
ABOUT THE DEATH EATERS Voldemort initially brought together his first followers in 1956 as the "Knights of Walpurgis" and the original group consisted of his housemates from Hogwarts. Although their existence was known to varying degrees among the ranks of purist society as they carried out quieter attacks and gathered power and followers, the group did not enter into the public consciousness until 1972 when the Dark Mark was seen in the sky for the first time. The goal of the Death Eaters is to preserve what they see as traditional wizarding society, free of the influence of Muggles. They do not believe that there is any place for Muggleborn witches and wizards in proper wizarding society and that Muggles are little more than animals to be killed or subjugated. Although there are some differences in the personal ideologies of Voldemort's followers, all Death Eaters should subscribe to this basic world view to some degree. The members of the Death Eaters are unknown to the public and conduct their actions in secret, under cloak and mask. There are some who may be suspected, either publicly or at the very least by DMLE and Order members, but Death Eaters should not be running around publicly bragging about their accomplishments. Although the Death Eaters know who each other are and a spouse may know that their husband is involved (this is left to the players in each relationship to determine) revealing the identity of another Death Eater to anyone is strictly forbidden. However which families are supportive of the purist ideology is more well known among the society circles. |
ORGANIZATION The Death Eaters are a highly regimented organization with every member having their place in the ranks and being well aware of where they stand in relation to the others. Deference to one's superiors is demanded and Voldemort frequently uses his Inner Circle to delegate his orders to the ranks rather than deal with the masses himself. An order from any of the Inner Circle is as good as an order from Voldemort himself. The ranks are not fixed - your ranking is determined by Voldemort based on your usefulness to the cause and your accomplishments and failures. With a bit of Voldemort's whim thrown in for good measure. The Inner Circle is only loosely ranked, although it is expected that the few younger members of the Inner Circle will provide the proper deference to those who have been at Voldemort's side since the start. For the Outer Circle, the rankings listed here are not necessarily where your character will start - their initial ranking in the game will depend on your application and any canon information available. New recruits to the Death Eaters start in the bottom half of the Outer Circle with their exact place depending on their potential. Inner Circle Sabriel Mulciber* Jonathan Nott* Solomon Rosier* Augustus Rookwood* Atticus Avery* Antonin Dolohov* Rodolphus Lestrange Bellatrix Lestrange * denotes original members of the Death Eaters Outer Circle Evan Rosier (+) Silas Selwyn Lucius Malfoy Walden Macnair (+) Rabastan Lestrange (+) Jugson Constantine Travers Wilkes Alton Avery Felix Greengrass Roderick Gamp Aston Mulciber Gibbon Severus Snape Igor Karkaroff Alecto Carrow Amycus Carrow Regulus Black Thorfinn Rowle Goyle Crabbe (-) denotes recent demotion; (+) denotes recent promotion |
MEMBERSHIP Aside from his initial followers, Voldemort does not personally recruit anyone into the Death Eaters. Most who have joined since then were approached by a current member of the Inner Circle who believed they would be an asset to the cause, although there are a few who were able to join by approaching a member of Voldemort's ranks themselves. Generally this approach is frowned upon. If a potential recruit is deemed worthy for membership, they're taken for an audience with Voldemort, subjected to legilimency and if they pass his scrutiny, the Dark Mark is burned into their left forearm. Once a Death Eater is accepted into the ranks, they are assigned an Inner Circle member to be their mentor. Frequently, but not always, this is the person who recruited them into the ranks. Mentors Atticus Avery - Felix Greengrass, Alton Avery Antonin Dolohov - Roderick Gamp, Igor Karkaroff Bellatrix Lestrange - Rodolphus Lestrange - Conrad Warrington, Severus Snape Valere Lestrange - Rabastan Lestrange Sabriel Mulciber - Aston Mulciber, Constantine Travers Jonathan Nott - Walden Macnair, Silas Selwyn Augustus Rookwood - Hannibal Rookwood, Hadrien Rookwood, Lucia Rookwood Solomon Rosier - Evan Rosier Membership in the Death Eaters is for life. Attempting to defect will result in your death. And remember that Voldemort is a legilimens, as are some of his most loyal followers. While it may be possible for your character to conceal minor things if they know occlumency, Death Eaters should be loyal to the cause. |
SUPPORTERS In addition to those who have taken the Dark Mark, there are those who are supportive of the cause and provide assistance in varying degrees. Most of the supporters are the wives and family members of Death Eaters who have very little knowledge of the Death Eaters actual activities but support the purist ideology and may provide support through financial and charitable efforts. There are also those who are more directly involved in the cause, but have not been allowed to take the mark for one reason or another. Most of these supporters are half breeds and other dark creatures who work for the cause, such as Fenrir Greyback. |
