Timeline
TIMELINE We all know that math is not exactly JKR's strong point and there are more than a few discrepancies in the dates she's given us. We've attempted to sort out her timeline as best as possible but sometimes the only thing to do is just make stuff up so everyone's on the same page. 1920s 1926 - Tom Riddle is born on December 31st. 1930s 1936 - After building an army of his own, Grindelwald begins his reign of terror in continental Europe. His power never extends into England. 1938 - Tom Riddle starts Hogwarts along with several of the original Death Eaters. 1940s 1943 - In the spring of his fifth year at Hogwarts, Tom Riddle opens the chamber of secrets and releases the basilisk that kills Myrtle. 1943 - The summer between his fifth and sixth years, Tom Riddle murders his father and paternal grandparents. 1945 - Tom Riddle finishes Hogwarts and goes to work at Borgin & Burkes after being denied a teaching position at Hogwarts. 1945 - Dumbledore defeats Grindelwald over the summer. Grindelwald is imprisoned in Nurmengard. 1947 - Tom Riddle kills Hepzibah Smith to steal Slytherin's locket and Hufflepuff's cup before disappearing from Britain. 1950s 1956 - Tom Riddle returns to Britain as Lord Voldemort in both name and appearance and begins organising his followers as the Knights of Walpurgis. Their initial efforts are focused on building political influence and support in purist society. 1956 - Albus Dumbledore replaces Armando Dippet as Headmaster of Hogwarts. 1957 - Voldemort curses the Defence Against the Dark Arts position when Dumbledore denies him the job. 1960s 1962 - Nobby Leach becomes Minister of Magic. 1966 - The Knights of Walpurgis begin using the name "Death Eaters" in private. Voldemort begins marking his followers with the Dark Mark and they start carrying out occasional attacks on Muggles and Muggleborns that are blamed on other Muggles or natural disasters. 1968 - Nobby Leach retires and Basil Sloper becomes Minister of Magic. Bartemius Crouch, Sr. takes over Minister Sloper's previous position as Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. 1970s 1970 - Dissatisfied with the effects of their initial attacks, the Death Eaters begin to escalate their attacks to the point where they can no longer be dismissed as freak occurrences. The DMLE tries to cover up the attacks, but whispers of fear begin spreading through society. 1972 - The Dark Mark is seen for the first time over the house of a Muggleborn Auror and his family who are all killed. The DMLE attributes this and subsequent Dark mark sightings to a "rogue terrorist group." 1972 - Knowing that Voldemort is clearly behind the attacks, Dumbledore creates the Order of the Phoenix. 1973 - Voldemort releases a statement to the Daily Prophet claiming credit for the attacks and declaring that he and his Death Eaters will not stop until the Ministry surrenders. 1973 - The Ministry offers a reward to anyone who provides information leading to the identification and/or arrest of a Death Eater following the deaths of two Muggleborn Wizengamot members. 1974 - Death Eaters continue their targeted attacks, focused mostly on Muggleborn Ministry employees and anyone who speaks out or stands against them. Some are successful, some are not. 1975 - Thanks to their research and reconnaissance, the Order becomes more successful at foiling Death Eater attacks and after several failed attacks, the Death Eaters begin focusing more of their efforts on Muggle towns and cities. A few small villages are completely obliterated. 1976 - The giants and werewolves form alliances with the Death Eaters and start carrying out semi-organised attacks of their own at Voldemort's behest. 1976 - The Wizengamot passes a law declaring that anyone convicted of being a Death Eater will be sentenced to life in Azkaban regardless of whether there are specific crimes that can be attributed to them. 1977 - The Death Eaters plan a major attack on Muggles in Canterbury with the intent of turning it into a wizard-only town. The Order discovers their plans and goes to stop them, marking the first major battle between the Order and the Death Eaters. 1977 - The Ministry issues a statement condemning and reaffirming the illegality of vigilante activities, declaring it no better than the terrorism of the Death Eaters. 1977 - In retaliation for Canterbury, the Death Eaters begin targeting the families of people who were identified at the battle. 1978 - Death Eaters further escalate their attacks, freely attacking Muggles and wizards alike with greater frequency. 1978 - Game begins |
